The key to decarbonizing long-distance road transport

A study by French consultancy Carbone 4 reveals that electrification is the most effective solution for decarbonizing long-distance road transport, surpassing hydrogen and biofuels in both efficiency and cost-effectiveness. While electric trucks require improved infrastructure and energy access, they offer a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to alternatives. Hydrogen struggles with low energy efficiency and high costs, while biofuels face supply limitations. For electrification to become competitive, advancements are needed in battery range, charging infrastructure, and vehicle affordability. Carbone 4 projects that electric trucks could account for 30% of sales by 2030 and 90% of the fleet by 2050, aligning with both manufacturer goals and environmental regulations.
