EU regulation on CO2 emission verification for heavy trucks takes effect

The European Union's regulation on CO2 emission verification for in-service heavy trucks came into effect on February 3, 2025. Complementing the May 2024 emission standards for new trucks, the regulation outlines procedures for verifying emissions of trucks already in operation. Manufacturers must report any discrepancies between actual emissions and those on the conformity certificates. If discrepancies are found, manufacturers have 20 days to challenge the results. Failure to respond will result in the discrepancy being factored into the manufacturer’s average CO2 emissions. This regulation excludes zero-emission trucks, which are governed by a separate EU rule. The measure aims to ensure compliance with European environmental standards for all heavy trucks in circulation.
