Electric trucks: could they carry an additional three tons?

Transport & Environment has released a study exploring the potential for electric trucks to carry extra weight to offset the burden of their batteries while minimizing road infrastructure impact. Currently, electric trucks can carry 2 tons more than diesel trucks. However, battery weight typically ranges from 4 to 6 tons. The NGO proposes allowing a 3-ton overload, with a maximum of 11.75 tons on the drive axle. For six-axle trucks, they suggest a 4-ton increase without road damage. This proposal remains under debate among European countries.
