UK Car Production Falls in 2025, Recovery Expected by 2026
UK automotive production declined 15.5% in 2025, reaching approximately 765,000 vehicles, according to SMMT. Chief Executive Mike Hawes described it as the toughest year in a generation, citing the shift to electric vehicles, US trade tariffs, and operational disruptions—including a cyberattack at Jaguar Land Rover. Exports were particularly affected by US tariffs. Despite the challenges, EVs accounted for a record 41.7% of production, up more than 8%. The industry anticipates a rebound in 2026, aiming for one million vehicles by 2027.
