2026: A Pivotal Year for Europe’s Transport Industry
Europe’s transport sector faces a challenging 2026, with multiple new regulations coming into effect. Under the EU General Safety Regulation, advanced emergency braking systems and event data recorders will be mandatory on newly produced trucks and buses. From July, vans between 2.5 and 3.5 tons operating internationally must be fitted with second-generation smart tachographs. ADR rules for transporting dangerous goods will be tightened, harmonizing inspections and extending supply chain liability. Simultaneously, digitalization of ECMT permits and the full rollout of the ICS2 customs system will require deeper IT integration. Expanding environmental zones and Germany’s rising minimum wage will further increase operating costs and complexity.
