FEV Says Range-Extender Electric Trucks Could Cut Costs by Up to 33%
Range anxiety and limited charging infrastructure remain key barriers preventing haulers from moving away from diesel. German engineering company FEV Group says range-extender electric trucks could address both issues while significantly reducing total cost of ownership (TCO). Based on internal research published in February 2026, FEV estimates savings of up to 33% in short-haul operations and around 14% in long-haul use compared with diesel trucks. The concept relies on a smaller 280 kWh battery, overnight depot charging at €0.19/kWh, and limited dependence on megawatt charging infrastructure. FEV also projects CO2 reductions of up to 82%, depending on usage patterns and energy mix, and is preparing real-world demonstrator vehicles.
