Aging workforce in the European trucking industry
In four years, the number of truck drivers is expected to reach 745,000, with nearly a third over the age of 55 and set to retire within the next decade. A study involving 1,000 European hauliers reveals that 50% of managers believe the driver shortage will impact business growth. Proposed solutions include investing in better vehicles (44%) and increasing salaries with bonuses. On average, European truck drivers earn 55% more than the minimum wage, with this figure reaching 133% in the Netherlands. Currently, only 4% of truck drivers in Europe are women, with Germany (7.2%), Romania (6.1%), and France (4.5%) having the highest percentages, despite still being relatively low.
