BYD Overtakes Tesla in Europe

Chinese automaker BYD surpassed Tesla in European registrations in July 2025, selling 13,503 vehicles—a 225% year-on-year increase—while Tesla’s deliveries fell 40% to 8,837 units. Despite the monthly lead, Tesla remains ahead for the year with 119,013 registrations (down 33.6%) compared with BYD’s 84,413 (up 290%). BYD’s market share has climbed from 0.3% to 1.1% over the past year, as Tesla’s slipped from 2.3% to 1.5%.

The shift is most pronounced in France, where BYD doubled sales to 6,445 units and Tesla’s fell 38.5%. BYD is mitigating EU tariffs by focusing on plug-in hybrids, which are exempt, and by exporting some models from Thailand to reduce tariffs.
