Electrified long-distance transport cheaper than diesel?
Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have demonstrated that running a heavy goods vehicle on electricity could be less expensive than on diesel. To reach this conclusion, the University took as a scenario heavy goods vehicles traveling the 553 kilometres between Helsingborg and Stockholm, Sweden. It compared two different battery sizes and two possible prices for fast charging. The conclusion was that it seems possible to electrify this type of vehicle in a cost-effective manner. As part of the study, the price of diesel was set at 1.20 euros per litre and the price of fast charging at 0.17 euros per kWh or alternatively at 0.40 euros per kWh.
